Often

Brother Yahya Naqvi delivers another profound poem about the need to always rely on our Creator, especially in times of trouble and sorrow. Indeed, we must always continue to pray.

Often, I ponder
Of life, its meaning…
My destination yonder

In a maze of thoughts
I often wander

I ask of God for a remedy
For these thoughts that often eat me
Make me right, show me light
For these thoughts might defeat me

The innocent die, but I feel no pain
Why don’t I cry in sorrow?
Am I spending time in vain?
Why is my existence hollow?
Is pretentious living not insane?

We walk on the same earth
Some in comfort, some in despair
I wish to appraise human worth
Carry burdens my friends bear

Often, I ponder
Of life, it’s meaning…
My destination yonder

In a maze of thoughts
I often wander

I ask of God for a remedy
For these thoughts that often eat me
Make me right, show me light
For these thoughts might defeat me

Of my purpose I lack comprehension
Follow norms, stay within convention
I run after a mirage that is fleeing
I recognize not the essence of being

Are my ambitions unreal?
Should I adopt flexibility?
If just a sign was revealed
I would fulfill responsibility

The length of journey I understand
It will consume all of my days
My strength, though, is in my hands
I must continue to just pray
