Prominent Muslim scholar and jurist Ayatollah Faqih Imami passed away in the holy city of Isfahan on Sunday, March 6, due to heart failure. He was 76 years old.

Sayyid Hasan Faqih Imami was born to a scholarly family in Isfahan, Iran, in 1354 AH (1934 CE). He began his religious education under his father Ayatollah Sayyid Ata’Allah Faqih Imami, and at the age of 16, he began his formal studies in the Islamic seminary in Isfahan. He studied under many eminent scholars of the time, including Ayatollah Muhammad Hussain Faqih, Ayatollah Muhammad Hasan Najafabadi, and Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Behbahani. He received permission to narrate traditions from ten different teachers.

For over 30 years, Ayatollah Faqih Imami was a respected scholar and reviver of the Islamic seminary in Isfahan. He was renowned for his expertise on exegesis of the Holy Qur’an, Nahjul Balagha, jurisprudence, logic, and biographical studies. In addition to these academic topics, he penned numerous books and articles addressing deviant ideologies, such as Communism, Baha’ism, and Wahhabism. He also established and revived several schools within the Isfahan seminary, including Madressa Muhammadia, Madressa al-Ghadir, Madressa Jawadia, and Madressa Imamia.

In a condolatory statement, Grand Ayatollah Saafi Gulpaygani praised Ayatollah Faqih Imami as a “beacon of knowledge, virtue, ethics, and struggle in the path of God, who dedicated his blessed life in servicing the religion. The late Ayatollah was an ardent defender and upholder of the School of Ahlul Bayt and furthermore, was a sincere servant of the sacred office of Imam Mahdi.”

On Sunday, 1st Rabi al-Thani, 1432 AH (March 6, 2011 CE), he passed away as a result of a heart failure. Funeral prayers for Ayatollah Faqih Imami were held on Monday morning, and he was laid to rest in his native Isfahan, which is observing three days of official mourning for the loss of this beloved scholar.
