A strong Islamic media doesn’t mean being the Muslim version of Fox News

When Muslims come to us decrying anti-Islam bias in the mainstream western media, they often times are looking for an emotional Muslim version of Fox News.  However, this is not what we want to be.

In life, there are those who have already made up their minds.  These are the ones who the Fox Newses of the world cater to.  They have a particular slant and they are going to make their readers happy.  Similarly, the Muslim world has its own ideologues who care less about accurate reporting and more about defending a particular perspective.

What many fail to realize is that a media which caters to the majority of undecided "swing voters," is in a better position to make positive change.  Such a media gives a just amount of space to opposing sides of an issue and, when needed, helping explain difficult ideas so that those who are uninformed may be in a better position to make decisions.  No media source escapes bias, but it’s better to not insist on what is debatable.

Today, there is tremendous confusion among the majority, both in Muslims and in non-Muslims.  We are bombarded nearly every moment with messages telling us to pay attention to someone else’s point of view.  Nearly anyone, at least in our part of the world, can pick up a pen or laptop and write what they believe is right.  We see the benefits in free speech and indeed we are able to publish this newspaper because of it.

What we have a problem with is irresponsible journalism.  Unfortunately, many of us have not figured this out and are adding to the confusion.  Many of us think that biased media is media speaking against Muslims while unbiased media is media which speaks in favor of Muslims.  This is wrong.  What if a Muslim commits a crime or does something wrong, should we not speak out against it?  No group, should consider itself privileged to arrogantly consider itself above inquiry.

Let none of this mean we do not see the widespread anti-Islam biases so prevalent around us.  Some newspapers claim to not be biased, pointing out they run articles sympathetic to the Muslm community as well as other minorities.  When one looks at such newspapers though, they have no problem in highlighting a Muslim for even sneezing the wrong way.

More now than ever before, it is necessary that our North American community  not wildly react to whatever negative is said about Muslims.  We should not fight fire with fire.  Our knowledgable ones have taught us to be above this.

The many people not only in the West but around the world who have not made up their minds are not stupid.  They are waiting for clear information.  The truth is clear from falsehood for enough people, and we should focus on showing it to them.
