On May 2, as the world watched in horror, the 01B-designated Cyclone Nargis hit the Southeast Asian nation of Burma. Over 100,000 people are estimated to have perished, whereas many more are displaced and homeless. In addition, however, the cyclone has had a devastating effect on the Shia community of Burma.

According to an email from Hujjatul Islam Syed Dilaver Abbas Husaini, a Shia leader in Burma, over a thousand Shia families in Burma are suffering in the aftermath of the cyclone. Most have lost their homes and businesses and are in dire need of financial assistance. Around 100 families need rebuilding assistance, which is approximately 1800 dollars per family. Another 900 families require assistance with purchasing household items and other miscellaneous expenditures, which comes out to around 300 to 400 dollars per family.
