A Eulogy for the Prince of Medina

On the scorching fields did he bear witness: his father killed, the orphaning of Ruqaya the princess, the opening of calamities and the paragon of tragedies. This young man seems to have overnight grown old.

Light a candle and seek the Prince of Medina
Engrossed in worship you shall find him
None can rival his devotion.
This young man seems to have overnight grown old
from heartache and misery untold
His smile once the beacon of light
He now seeks refuge in prayer of the night
On the scorching fields did he bear witness
his father killed, the orphaning of Ruqaya the princess
the opening of calamities and the paragon of tragedies.

The young prince watches as the heroes are slaughtered for justice
The successor of the Messenger is now in chains
As the dreary prison cell becomes his companion
Behold O’ Damascus!
The most honorable of men is your prisoner
In your ignorance you torture and neglect the Grandson of Muhammad.

Years pass..
Back in Medina you will find al-Sajjad praying to his Lord
He becomes the father of the unfed orphans
The perfect politician!
So pure and humble, enough to earn the envy of the kings.
The visitor arrives at his door
Seeing the effects of the bloodshed after decades remain
He attempts to offer Al-Sajjad condolences
No words eloquent enough to console the man with back broken from prayer
The guest in awe of such nobility pens a poem
A poem of love, prayer, and hope,
dedicated to the prince of Medina
With what words can he convey?
The purity, the righteousness, and the supremacy
of the Prince of the Submitting?
